Pushkar is a temple town near the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan. It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus due to the legend of Brahma, creator of the universe, who dropped a lotus leaf from his hand, and a lake appeared. Pushkar is renowned for its ghats, which are steps down to a riverbank or body of water. Ghats are famous in many Indian cities, especially those along the banks of rivers, such as the Ganges. Pushkar is a fantastic place to visit for its spiritual significance, colourful bazaars, and traditional festivals. Pushkar has been described as having โchaotic beautyโ, and it is certainly a place worth visiting for spirituality, fun, and an insight into Indian culture.ย
Places worth visiting include the Jagat Palace, Bharma Temple, which is one of Pushkarโs most famous. It is dedicated to Lord Bharma, and there are beautiful wall paintings, stunning architecture, and a magnificent white statue of Lord Shiva.
Pushkar Lake is famous for being one of the most sacred lakes and is a place of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Sikhs, who come from all over India to purify themselves in the holy water. The lake is often full of rose petals from the puja ceremonies that take place by the water, where people give offerings to the gods for their blessings.ย
Pushkar is also famous for its camels and for hosting the worldโs biggest Pushkar Camel Fair.
The ghats (or steps) up and down the lake are a spectacle in themselves, and the most famous one is Gau Ghat, sometimes known as โGhandi Ghat,โ as Mahatma Gandhiโs ashes were scattered there in 1948, after his assassination. It is also the best place to watch the sunset. Every evening at 5.40 pm is the religious Aarti ceremony performed at the Varah Ghat. This is an experience really worth seeing!
Donโt forget to go shopping in Pushkarโs amazing bazaars and sample the wonderful street food as well.
