Mathura is a sacred city, situated on the banks of the River Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is most famous for being the birthplace of Lord Krishna and is one of Hinduismโs seven holy cities. The city is home to numerous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. He is one of Hinduismโs best-loved deities, in his many forms and avatars.
Mathura, as well as its twin city Vrindavan, forms the heart of this sacred region, encompassing the land where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, and is a major place of pilgrimage for his devotees.
Significant temples to visit in Mathura include the Sri Krishna Janmasthan Temple, Dwarkadhish Temple, Govardhan, and Prem Mandir, all of which are well worth a visit.
Mathura is particularly worth visiting during the Festival of Colours – Holi. This is a spring festival and a joyous one, involving the throwing of coloured powder at each other, celebrating the divine love of Radha Krishna and the victory of good over evil. It is usually celebrated in March. Just donโt wear your best clothes for this joyful festival!
